Texas House Bill 1605 has introduced significant changes to the process of adopting and funding high-quality instructional materials in Texas schools. Through the newly updated Instructional Materials Review and Approval (IMRA) process all materials must be 100% aligned with the TEKS, support all learners, and include robust implementation support for teachers. The first review under this process this year will include mathematics products for grades K–12. Following this review the State Board of Education (SBOE) will vote to add materials to the list of approved instructional materials.
House Bill 1605 also introduces new funding opportunities for any school or local education agency (LEA) that adopts SBOE-approved materials. Schools will receive $40 per student with an additional $20 per student available to support the printing costs associated with selecting an OER program.
